Hi
By now, you've probably taken down your Christmas tree and packed it away for next year.
I always love both putting the tree up and the feeling of a fresh start when it's time to take it down. It feels like a reset for the house once all the Christmas decor is packed away.
You know what else it sometimes feels like?
Boring.
Lifeless.
Empty.
Or is it just me?
If your room is having any of those issues, it might be trying to tell you that it really wants a plant to perk it up and bring it back to life.
I don't usually just come right out and say that you need to buy something, I'm all about finding great solutions that don't always require purchasing something new.
HOWEVER, if you do not have a real, live plant in your house, you are missing out.
Consider buying yourself and your house a real plant.
Pretend plants are a close second (if they are realistic enough to fool people) and I'm not against mixing in some pretend plants with live, living greens.
But if your house has zero live plants, you are missing out on the particular magic that an imperfect living plant adds.
Yes, your plant will die one day.
Maybe in two months, maybe in two years. Maybe in two decades. That's not an excuse to not enjoy a plant while it's alive.
If you pay $12 for a plant and it lives six months, you're paying $2 a month to enjoy that plant. That's 67 cents a day to have a beautiful green plant in your home. And that's if it dies after six months. The more you practice caring for plants, the quicker you'll find the type of plant that you can easily keep alive.
Consider picking up a plant the next time you're at the grocery store, home improvement store or, stop by your local nursery. Before you go, keep an eye on the places in your house that could use some green and notice if they get actual sunbeams, filtered light or hardly any natural light.
When you look at the plants in the stores, read the tag to see what kind of light the plant needs and choose accordingly.
I bought this shamrock plant at the grocery store last March--a well spent $4.99 --I'm shocked it's still alive!
A few plants I've had good luck with:
1. Kangaroo Paw Fern (I water it when it wilts, likes it bright but doesn't require sunbeams) Mine lives on top of the fridge. Here's a link to one via
Home Depot-but unless you can't leave the house, you can probably find one in person for $15 at a nursery.
Off you go to find a plant!
Chad and I are hosting the fifth annual Nest Fest here at our house, barn and property Saturday October 17 in Midland, NC (20 minutes east of Charlotte). Tickets will go on sale in September, we'll begin taking vendor applications in June.
If you like noticing good things, you'll love #TheGoodList.
"It is, simply put, a naming of happy moments. It is for surveying our days, for calling it good. It is for noticing, for paying attention, for practicing the fine and weighty art of gratitude." (from this post)
You can join in the hashtag if you ever want to.
If you like hearing about good things, you'll love this:
Last week, our friend and podcaster legend Tsh started a new, brilliantly simple show called The Good List.
I think you'll really enjoy it.
A few things on my current good list:
My new Full Focus Planner (Tsh talks about hers in episode one!) Iv'e been using the FFP for over two years. I just switched to the oatmeal color from black and I love it. It's a sturdy, simple quarterly planner so there's lots of writing room.
Lastly, this one is for anyone who loves to write...
My sister, Emily P. Freeman is hosting a free online masterclass tomorrow.
The online workshop is called, “From Dreaming to Doing: Stop waiting, start planning, and finally bring your writing to life.” It will help writers who want to establish a consistent writing routine, find the courage to share their words, or finally get a book published to:
-
Identify the primary obstacle keeping them from their best writing
-
Write a clear vision statement for their work in 2020
-
Create a simple plan for their next writing step
Alrighty, don't forget about plants--if you end up with a new plant be sure to tag me on Instagram @thenester so I can cheer you on!
Here's to home!
