Hi
I’ve never been one to put a bunch of random inspirational quotes all over my office, locker or dorm, no matter the decade.
I’m a minimalist with a side of cozy, (or coziest with a side of minimal depending on the day) so anything I have up on my walls has to earn its keep.
But over time, I’ve collected a few thoughts that have made a huge difference in helping me know what to focus on and guiding me in what to do next. I wrote them on plain white notecards and taped them to my wall in my office.
As I’ve applied these three mantras to my work, I realized they can help in almost every situation in life.
Maybe they can help you too.
Whether you are living in a fixer upper, facing a big project or figuring out what to cook for dinner, consider these three mantras:
Do what you know
Use what you have
Finish what you started
A few months ago it was time to tackle the next project in our never ending fixer-upper and I was at a loss to know what to focus on. Half of this house, inside and out, still needs attention.
Once I considered the three mantras, I knew what we should do, because starting a big garage project seemed daunting and huge and I didn't feel ready for it, but finally finishing our front porch, upgrading our doors and planting actual plants around the front of the house was something I KNEW needed to be done and felt doable.
We had put off finishing our front exterior entry for years, we had a friend who could build beautiful doors, we had started that project with a few temporary fixes, and this project felt right.
It made sense to do what we knew, use what we had and finish what we started before we started a brand new, huge project.
still in progress shot of the porch, on the right: new doors, new wide steps, almost ready to remove that random column and give the house a new skirt!
If you want to hear a conversation about making decisions and how I use these mantras, you can listen to this Episode of The Next Right Thing Podcast where my sister Emily and I talk about decision making, baby possums and I share about how the three mantras have helped me stay focused.
Today, instead of feeling overwhelmed with what to focus on, consider doing what you know, using what you have and finishing what you've started.
Here's to home,

PS: Maybe, when it comes to home, you need a little guidance so you truly feel confident in what you know, what to start, and what you really already have. I get it. If so you'll LOVE the Homemaking Bundle.
Today is the last day to get the bundle--this is a one time a year offer full of simple, applicable home resources and next year's bundle will be completely different, so this is your last chance to get these resources all bundled together.
