It only took a few minutes of shopping our house and barn for me to realize that I already had exactly what I needed for those corner walls. Yes, after deconstructing my accidental gallery walls for a year and a half, I realized I had everything I needed to simplify the look and hone in more on my personal style.
I added a vintage elk antler mount (found it on craiglist 6 years ago for $25) on one wall, and a painted mirror on the adjacent wall (from a local shop).
Once I had those two large pieces up, the room breathed a sigh of relief and so did I.
{Edited to add, as I'm proof reading this email, I realized that one of the walls has two items. My mind doesn't even see it that way because I've trained myself to separate my wall based on the furniture that's on it. So for me, the sofa walls have one large item on each wall. And then additionally, the wall over the lamp has a tiny piece. In the room it just felt like that small space wanted to be recognized, plus the large mirror felt off balance on the
wall since I want it centered over the sofa. Adding one tiny piece of art was a great solution for me in this scenario--which I did AFTER I hung the big art. So if you are wondering if I can count or not, I can.}
I didn't need 101 small things, just two large items that filled the space.
Fewer, but better
(or in this case, bigger)
As a result, our family room looked more pulled together, peaceful and ultimately, more stylish because large, riskier items magically seem to add more style to a room. Yep, it's true!
If your house, room, wall or surface is getting on your nerves and you feel the urge to simplify, consider if it's full of too many Smalls.
Where can you replace a collection of Smalls for one Large?
